Greenware meiping, or plum blossom, vase

  • Literature notes

This piece is rather finer in body material than the usual Longquan wares, and may rather have been made in the porcelain-producing region of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province.

With a low, narrow waisted neck, the vase tapers from a rounded shoulder towards the base, which is recessed and surrounded by a broad footring. The sides are decorated with overall horizontal grooves, the neck is plain. The near-white stoneware body carries a translucent light blue-green glaze, the unglazed footring has fired an intense brick-red, and the base has grit adhering.
