White ware bowl with floral decoration

  • loan
  • Literature notes

The piece copies Ding ware of the Northern Song dynasty (AD 960–1127), but the opaque glaze is very different from the original.

With wide conical sides, slightly flaring towards the rim, and a narrow, somewhat splayed foot, the piece is decorated on the outside with an incised flower-scroll border between a band of petal panels and a border of ruyi heads in relief around the rim. The off-white body is covered with an opaque cream-coloured glaze with a grainy surface, which largely obliterates the design. The inside appears to be plain.
