Literature notes
The flat pendant is made of opaque, yellowish-beige stone, carved like a stylized phoenix, its head, with pointed beak and bushy crest, its curling body formed of curved bands with protruding curls to indicate feet and tail. The surface is carved with simple dots and curls in the style of archaic jades. -

Mythical bird known as hōō in Japan. The Islamic tradition appropriated the far-eastern iconography of the phoenix and used it to represent another mythical bird, the simurgh.
