This image depicts Mao addressing Red Guards, soldiers and students at Tiananmen. It reproduces a work in oil on canvas painted by a group of professors at the Central Academy of Fine Art for the 1972 National Exhibition, itself a version of an anonymous collaborative painting in one of the Red Guard art exhibitions of 1967 in which the figures behind Mao are other Cultural Revolution leaders, in military clothes.
