Liang Chen was probably active in the 19th century in present-day Guangdong province, as the Mr Yeyuan mentioned in the inscription here is also named on a fan-calligraphy by another Cantonese scholar Chen Li (1810-1882), now in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei. This painting uses the technique of mogu, to paint without outlines. The birds' feathers were coloured by the techniques of smearing and dotting. The inscription reads 'Painted at the request of the esteemed Mr. Yeyuan.'
